Lost .doc

After making a change to an already saved and important .doc file I
decided not to make the correction ... Up came the window "Would you
like to save the changes?" and with a knee jerk reaction just hit the
"NO" button ... lost my many hours of preciously hard work.

Is there any way of retrieving the "deleted" file??

Nope. Once you have closed Word correctly, all temp files are closed and
lost forever. SO unless you have BOTH the Always Create a Backup copy
enabled AND you made a save whilst editing, all is lost.
