lost document

Sorry to trouble everyone, my friend Eleanor has lost her
essay. She is running word 97 SR1 on Windows ME. A
shortcut still exists in the documents menu, but it
points to a completely different document. Searches of my
computer for a word in the filename, for a word in the
document, and for all files modified in the last 24 hours
turns up nothing of interest, even when the computer is
set to display all files including hidden and protected
OS files. Reopening word does not recover the document.
Scandisk reports no errors on the drive in both standard
and thorough mode. She is quite computer literate, and I
don't think she's done anything silly.

Has anyone experienced a problem like this, or does
anyone have any more suggestions?

Thankyou all.

If the Start menu shortcut points to a different document, the likelihood is
that a different document was inadvertently saved with the filename of the
document sought. If Eleanor had "Always create backup copy" enabled, there
might be some hope of turning up a "Backup of <filename>.wbk" file that
would be an earlier version, but if such a file existed, your search would
have found it. Sounds pretty hopeless, I'm afraid.
