lost documents

Sometimes when I pull a minimized document off the bottom
bar (navigation bar?), it closes the document altogether
and word (or excel) has to recover it. Why is this
happening?

A bizarre bug in Windows. You need to go to the Control Panel, Region
Settings, Languages, Advanced tab and uninstall Handwriting Recognition. (If
you use Handwriting Recognition, you may install it again after a reboot and
the bug shouldn't return.)
