Lost file

I have a document that I was working on and attempted to save it. Shortly
after it said that the file will be saved and closed as a problem was
encounted. It subsequently deleted my file from my removable disk, how do I
recover any part of my file (thesis). This is a major problem but several
other smaller problems have been occuring.

This is unfortunate and illustrates why you should NEVER save directly to
any type of removable media. Word has a very complex save procedure and
creates temp files in the active folder during the save, reading and
overwriting the temp files until it has created the full document.
Generally, using REM media is significantly dangerous because compared to
the local disk drive it is slow media with slow I/O and if there is a
shortage of space - much larger than the actual file to be saved - it will
corrupt.

I doubt that Word deleted the file from REM media: more likely it was unable
to save it due to one of the problems above. You may be able to recover some
of this if you use a file recovery utility and you haven't written anything
to the REM media since. You may also find an older version on your local
hard disk as a temp file.

Also, depending on which version of Word you have, you should enable the
'Make Local Copy' or Copy remote stored file' which will give some
resilience to saving directly to REM media.

But I would ALWAYS recommend to save to your local HDD then in Word's File
Open/Save dialog, right-click on the document and use Send To to copy the
file to the local media.

For versions prior to Word 2007 it's in Tools=>Options=>Save
[Make local copy...]
For Word 2007 it's in
Office File Button=>Word Options=>Advanced=>Save
[Copy remotely stored files...]
