I accidently hit, save over an existing file ,and have lost my whole research

If you don't have a backup file, you're out of luck. I assume you've already
closed that file?

If you're using Vista as your operating system, you can try right-clicking
the file in a window (like in My Documents) and choosing Restore Previous
Versions.

Is this only in certain versions, or do parameters apply? (Don't see that
option on right-clicking a file in Home Premium....)

I have no idea. It could be version-specific; I'm using Vista Ultimate and I
see the option here.

Looks like Vista Ultimate or "Business editions."
