Lost Outlook files

My laptop uses Windows Vista Home and MSOffice 2003 Basic for Students and Teachers. The motherboard got fried when the wrong charger was inadvertently connected and we took out the Hard Drive in order to access info from it. We are unable to find any Outlook backup files (PST) although I regularly backed up my system to PST files. I am told Vista may change the files to a different extensionn. Who can tell me the best way to find those files so I may access the emails already downloaded in their individual folders and contacts files in that Outlook program?

First of all, how did you backup TO pst files? Unless you connect to
Exchange Server, your Outlook data is already IN a pst file. A pst file
is NOT a "backup" file.
Did you search for hidden files when looking for your pst files?

The outlook data files are named *.pst, and in Vista the default location
is;
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

You would need to locate these files on the old drive, then copy to eg
Documents Folder, then open within Outlook
