lost PST file under XP

T

Tony Travis

I want to re-install Office and XP, but retain my
messages, claendar etc in Outlook. Under Win 98 this was
simnple - I copied the old .pst file and then dropped it
in after I'd re-installed.

Problem is - I can't find a remotely current Outlook.pst
file - even though all my messages, calendar & contacts
info display are current and display when I open Outlook,
the only .pst file I can find is dated way back in
December.

Any ideas, anyone?

Make sure you include hidden and system files and folders when searching for
pst-file.

By default it is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

You can also locate the file by using
Rightclick the root folder (probably Outlook Today)-> Properties-> button
Advanced-> field Filename

Thanks for your advice - I now find I have two sets
of .pst files - there is a sepearte folder with the path
\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Microsoft\Outlook\ (yes
\Microsoft\Outlook\ is repeated) on the other hard disk in
my machine, containing the up-to-date outlook.pst and
archive.pst files (I'd originally only searched on the \C:
drive)
I definitely didn't create this myself and I'm very
mystified (and a bit worried - I now seem to have Outlook
PST files spread all over the place) as to how it
happened. Is there a way of consolidating them all without
data loss?

Yes, connect to the other files in Outlook by File-> Open-> Outlook Data
File...

Now you can copy the messages from one pst-file to the other.

I suggest that once you're done you rename the old pst-files to .old and
place your main pst-file to a location you prefer. Now when you start
Outlook you'll get prompted for the pst filelocation. Browse to the new
location of the file and you should be set.
