In Outlook 2003, I did a 'Detect and Repair...' command and lost my
downloaded email, Rules and Alerts and access to the news reader.

Is it possible to recover my rules or am I doomed to typing them all back in
one at a time?

I used to access a news reader through Go\News. That menu item is no longer
present. How can I recover it?

You did a Detect & Repair with resetting your settings. This means you'll
need to recreate your mail profile by going to Control Panel-> Mail. Once
Outlook is configured you can open your pst-file (the file containing your
mail, contact, calendar, etc items) by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...

To set it as your default delivery location go to Tools-> E-mail Accounts->
button Next-> dropdownlist at the bottom of the window.

Restart Outlook and your Rules should be back now as well. If not; you'll
need to recreate the rules indeed.

To get the news command back make sure Outlook Express is set as the default
newsreader in Control Panel-> Internet Options-> tab Programs

If it's not back yet you can customize your Toolbar; View-> Toolbar->
Customize...

Oops. Before I saw this reply, I'd already made things worse. Following the
advice of the local sys admin, I'd gone through the email accounts menu
command and added a personal folder based upon the file that I'd found that
contains my previous data. Now I have two 'Personal Files' items showing in
the left hand tree control, one of which is getting new email but is
otherwise empty. The other one has my old email, contacts, etc. How do I get
back to a single 'Personal Folders'?

OK, recovered. The key was, as I'm sure you already know, to not set
Outlook's options from within Outlook's options command but to do so through
the Control Panel's Mail settings. I was able to delete the 'new' PST and
assert the old PST as the one to use and that gave me back the old alerts,
contacts, email, tasks, journal, etc. Whew! Thanks for the tip.
