Lost sheets in Excel 2007 compatability mode

When I open an Excel 2003 file it goes into compatability mode, but one or
more spreadsheets in the workbook are lost (depending on the file).
Converting to 2007, closing and reopening does not restore the lost sheets.
Is there a fix for this?
