lotus to excel conversion

I am trying to convert a very large lotus smartsuite 97 database file t
excel, preferably using freeware. How to go about it?

Do you mean it's a 123 spreadsheet or an Approach database? If it's
the latter, what is the underlying database format? Approach is a
essentially a GUI fromt end, with a 'proper' backend database (IIRC
the default is dBase).
