Low memory problems

John Downey

I have a persistent and pervasive "low memory" problem running
PowerPoint 8.0 for Mac (part of Office 98 suite). It's been a problem
since I first started using PowerPoint a couple years ago. Recently I
started using PowerPoint much more so its gone from being a minor
nuisance to a major headache.

I've tried increasing the memory allocation and restarting with
extensions disabled without notable success. Among the messages I've
received:

"Sorry, memory is full. PowerPoint must quit immediately."

"Memory is too low to continue. The current presentation will now be
closed."

I'm running a G4 PowerPC (400 MHz) and OS 9.1. The same problem has
occured on my laptop (PowerBook G4).

Will upgrading to a later version of PP solve the problem? Any other
options?

Thanks,
John Downey

Hi

It sure sounds like you have not allocated enough memory to PowerPoint in
the Preferred section of Get Info.

You may need 50000 or even more if you have movies and graphics in a
presentation. Don't adjust the other setting.

Also, you may be trying to open a presentation from a floppy (or other) disk
that does not have enough room. If a presentation takes more than 50% of a
floppy's disk space then when PowerPoint opens its hidden files it won't
have enough room to work. Drag the presentation to a large disk before
opening it.
