Low resource error message-Word 2000

When I try to open Word 2000 my computer freezes then I
get a message stating that the computer's resources are
dangerlously low. This happened first to my home computer
and I thought it was a problem with the computer and I
took it in for service to Gateway who couldn't find
anything wrong with the computer. Today, the exact same
problem has happened with my office computer. Gateway
decided to just reformat the whoel hard drive. I would
like to avoid having to do this with the office computer.
Any idea what's going on?
