I am a newbie and cannot figure how to make a combo or list box work, like
used in the Northwinds database. Where can I resources that will explain it
in newbie terms?

Right now I have all my forms on the switchboard and it is cumbersome. I
would like a selection box like in Northwinds, where the user would have a
list of reports to choose from.

Take a look at

the 'Listing of Database Objects' demonstrates how to create a listing of
reports, queries... You can then use it as a source to populate your combo
box or listbox.
