I am using Excel in building a data base. I have just found that several
columns seem to be "locked together." When I try to cut and paste one
of them to move it to another position, I get a message saying I can't
do multiple columns. I have not intentially "joined" these columns.
What happened? How can I undo them?

The Excel help doesn't help me on this one!

You have merged cells.

Select your columns and choose Format/Cells/Alignment and uncheck the
merge cells checkbox (or, if you're using XLv.X or XL04, just uncheck
the merge cells checkbox in the Alignment section of the Formatting
Palette).

For this and other reasons, merged cells are the spawn of Satan and
should never be used, period.
