If Apple Mail is quit, it can't connect to download your mail.

What type of account do you have? POP, IMAP, Exchange

If Apple mail is downloading and deleting from server before Entourage has
an opportunity, there will be no email to download.

I am connected to Office Exchange Server 2003 and have just installed Office:mac 2008.

If I go to Preferences -> General -> Set Entourage to be my default e-mail Client, the bar clicks blue and nothing else happens.

When I go to Word, File -> Send to -> Mail recipient (as Attachment). Mac Mail over rides, and I get a blank Mac Mail message with my Word doc attached.

In that case, see if choosing Entourage 2008 from the dropdown list in
the General section of Mail's preferences solves the problem.

I get the error message:
problem with SMPT Server
trying to find authentication methods and/or network administrator
as advised in the error message. Don't understand what to change.

Their are two POP accounts and I have tried to delete one but no success. I have even tried to give them the same info but the system won't accept.

I, too, am having the same problem as Shirley. If I try to send Mac mail, Entourage keeps displaying the error "Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't support any of the available authentication methods."

I am not sure what else to do, as I have checked and triple checked all of my settings.

Any ideas?

Go to Tools>Accounts, select your .Mac account and make sure you have not
enabled any of the advanced options for both the incoming and outgoing
server. The only options that need to be activated are "SMTP server requires
authentication" and "Use same settings as receiving mail server". Feel free
to disable any other options and see if it works now.

I'm going to assume you're both using .Mac's IMAP and not POP. Correct?
Does receiving mail work? If so...

In your .Mac account's settings under the Account Settings tab, locate
the Sending Mail section at the bottom. The server should be "smtp.mac.com".

Click the "Click here for advanced sending options" button. You need to
select "SMTP requires secure connection (SSL)" as well as "SMTP server
requires authentication" with "Use same settings as receiving mail server".

If this doesn't work then you may have outside network settings blocking
your outgoing messages.

Hope this helps!

Could you provide more info on what happens when you try to delete the
account, any error messages?
What version you are using, 2004 or 2008?
Are you trying to do this from the menu tools:accounts and deleting it from
there?

I am also unable to send email using entourage 2004. I have both an imail and gmail account the function fine. I seem to receive emails in entourage. I have gone through all of the settings outlined above and still receive 2 error messages when I attempt to send email--"an unknown error (-17199) occurred" and "an operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded or there may be too much net traffic." Each time I open entourage, it attempts to send the emails that are in my outbox and I get the same messages.

Any other ideas?

I seem to have a problem importing my messages from Apple Mail to Entourage. I cannot seem to import any of the messages from the mail inbox to entourage inbox using the import function in entourage.

I am using POP and entourage 2008 and Mail 3.1. Has anyone seen this problem?

I cannot SMTP to gmail with Entourage - no matter what account settings I use Entourage "cannot find the server". I can access gmail with Apple Mail and have used the same settings with Entourage but to no avail. I can POP from gmail with Entourage, and can SMTP with another POP account with Entourage. What am I doing wrong?

There are different settings for Mail.app and Entourage. Follow the
instructions on this page here to set up your account:

<http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13286>

If you want to go with IMAP instead of POP, follow these instructions:

I was having the same problem. Could receive but not send. I think I figured it out:

In account settings:

1. Click "Click here for advanced sening options"
2. Check the following boxes.
    [X] SMTP service...
[X] Override server... AND enter 587 as the port
    [X] SMTP server requires...
          (X) Use same settings...

Me too.

My .mac messages imported OK, but not my POP account messages.

Entourage did import my wife's gmail messages. That account was never activated in mail!!!

I also am having problems sending mail from Entourage. I have spent the day repairing KeyChain Access, repairing Disk Permissions, rebuilding my Entourage database, checking my Entourage account settings, all to no avail. I get the Error 111--"the server timed out..." every time it tries to send. What's very odd is that mail I send to my husband, who is on the same network as I am, is the only mail that will go through.

Adding a me too to an old thread is not a good idea. There are no previous
messages still left on the server to see what you might be referring to with
your question. Many of us use newsreaders and don't see what you see on the
web forum.

Did you realize this is not a web forum, but a web interface to this
newsgroup? The Mactopia web interface is just one way to access. If you can
do an email, then you can use the Entourage newsreader.

Another benefit is messages are downloaded and searchable by Entourage's
Spotlight search. By clicking on the "more" button you can get older
messages to search for help.
