Mac Word 2004 can't open Word Win 2003 docs

I am receiving documents from a friend using Word 2003 for Windows,
and I can't open them. I get the following error message:

"Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or
might not be a valid Word document."

I've tried saving it to the desktop, and opening it from within Word.
No luck.

Any ideas?
