I use quick parts in building blocks in windows word and wonder if the equivalent is available in MacWord 2008?

Not as you know it in Word 2007: In fact, that feature is a compendium of
other capabilities all thrown together under one umbrella. Not knowing which
ones you're referring to makes it hard to provide a direct answer, but if
you click the Document Elements button in the Elements Gallery you may find
some of what you're looking for. Other features ‹ such as AutoText &
AutoCorrect among others ‹ may well suit your purpose.

If you can be more specific about what you're looking for perhaps the
choices & alternatives can be suggested.
