MacBook Pro with Office 2008 for MAC - PPT file will not open

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Hi, I receive PPT files from a financial institution in Brazil, which I believe are created on a Windows PC. Upon trying to open the file I receive a message from Powerpoint stating that the file cannot open as it has DRM (Digital Rights Management) and a password is needed. I press OK, the message goes away, the file opening process is cancelled and no Password entry screen appears.

I have opened the file on a Windows PC, no problem. All I have to do is use the file in Read Only mode. There is no Password required, thus the file is not password protected. The only restriction is that it be opened in Read Only mode.

Can anyone help me with this glitch?

When I purchased Office 2008 for Mac I thought it would work transparently for all relevant Office created files on my MacBook Pro. What a disappointment...

Thanks for the community for any assistance.

This has nothing to do with Mac/PC Office file compatibility. And it isn't a
'glitch' :) It's working exactly as designed to prevent the file from being
opened on anything other than a Windows-based system. The source of the file
has chosen to impose a Windows-only protection scheme.

DRM is a Windows technology which is not [widely] employed by Mac OS, so it
isn't supported in Mac Office. The file is specially encrypted & the
roadblock is virtually impassible because PPT for Mac has *never* used
password protection, so the mechanism for it simply is not there... It's
something that arbitrarily was added to the PC version a few releases back.

I don't work with it much, but you might try playing the presentation in
your browser using File> Open. I'm honestly not sure what might be required
beyond that but perhaps one of the others who hang out here can offer an
idea.

I am a little confused about the reply. The user has applied a windows based encryption? However when I open the file on a windows pc I can do so, as a read only file. No password required. no decryption required.
Perhaps if the file allowed read and write capability, then this issue would not arise?

Hi Jay,

Simply put, what Bob Jones was trying to say is, "you can't."

PowerPoint for Mac does not support DRM (Digital Rights Management) and
is therefore unable to open any presentation that has DRM. You can use
such files only with PowerPoint for Windows.
