Does anyone have a suggestion of a good step by step book that tells you how
to create macros?

For Word VBA, the MSFT Press step by step books were quite good.

According to www.pricegrabber.comm both www.bn.com and www.walmart.com are
still selling copies of the Word 97 VBA Step By Step (ISBN:1-57231-388-9).
Also www.amazon.com has folkes trying to sell copies in various conditions.

I read the book many years ago and found it useful for a one shot read, but
it is not really useful after the first reading.

You might be better of looking at the list of Word VBA books at
http://www.standards.com/links.html?WordVBABooks.
I'd suggest Steve Roman's Writing Word Macros.

I am just starting with VBA in Word and I have found the
Word 2000 Develepor's Handbook to be an amazing help.
