Macro stopped working

The back up worked for the macro problem AND also fixed
the problem with recording new macros. Thanks for your
response.

You might want to investigate what caused your Normal.dot to be overwritten.
This could be the action of a poorly written add-in. Make sure that you have
"Prompt to save Normal template" checked on the Save tab of Tools | Options
so that you will at least be asked for permission (and you can say no)
before changes to Normal.dot are saved.
