Macro to run Autotexts

S

Sharon L.

Boy, do I miss autotexts!! At any rate, a macro was assigned to the key to
run Autotexts in Word 2007 so I created a macro assigning another key. Every
so often Word just decides to lose this macro & it will no longer work. This
time I can't recreate it. Every time I create the macro, when I run it I get
the error message "out of stack space."

I hit "record macro" and give it the name "autotext" and assign it to a key.
All the macro then consists of is going to the list of macros, choosing
"word commands," selecting "Autotext" and clicking "run." I then stop
recording the macro. When I run it, I get the "out of stack space" error.
It has always worked before. Any suggestions? I'm very heavily reliant on
autotexts in my work and losing the feature in 2007 was aggravating enough
but having them inaccessible is just not acceptable. Please help!!

Thanks!

You will find by selecting the pull down on the QAT, then More Commands,
Commands Not in Ribbon, AutoText.

Sharon,

All autotext are uniquely named and are accessed by typing enough unique
characters of the name and pressing F3 key to play the autotext entry. No
macro is needed. So if you name "New York City" as an autotext called "NYC"
then you type (not case sensitive):
nyc then Press F3 key to play
New York City
appears on the screen.

Autotext is something you should know what it is named and you play it
whenever you need to insert the text or table or graphic or TOC and so on.
Autotext is an available gallery in Building Blocks and runs the same way in
2007. All building block entries will play as autotext in 2007 there is
nothing new or nothing lost.

Janine,

Thanks - unfortunately, I think you missed the first part of my post. I
know that autotexts are run by pressing F3. Unfortunately, someone assigned
a macro they created to the F3 key so it no longer functions to run
autotexts. As a result, I created a macro to run autotexts since F3 no
longer will. That macro worked until yesterday, now it gives me the "out of
stack space" error message. I've tried recreating the macro from scratch
and, no matter what I do, I get that error message.

Any help on creating a new macro, or returning the F3 key to the autotext
function, would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
-Sharon

Thanks, Bob. I tried it but that gives me a box that I have to manually
scroll through to find the autotext I want and then select it. That's fine
for occasional use but I really need something that will work like the F3 key
is supposed to so I don't have to manually search every time I want an
autotext.

Oh, forgot to ask about this - I'm not sure what you mean by "nothing lost."
I mentioned that Word 2007 "lost" the macro I created - which it did. Does
it frequently. Macros that work one day will suddenly be nonfunctional.
They're technically still there, but they don't work and have to be
recreated. Drives me crazy.

If you meant nothing is lost as far as Autotexts, in Word 2003 it had
autocomplete, where you began typing the name of the autotext, a box popped
up & you just hit the "enter" key to run the autotext. My "help" in 2007
says that feature has been discontinued, so that's a feature I've lost. It's
one I relied on quite heavily and if that "help" entry is incorrect, I would
be forever in the debt of anyone who can tell me how to get the autocomplete
to work in 2007!!

Thanks!

Ok, then perhaps recover the commandeered F3 key from the other macro?

That would be ideal but I have no idea how to do it!! When I try to create
a macro I get that space error message. Any ideas on how to get the F3 back
to its original function?

I think I'd start by running Microsoft Office Diagnostics first and see
if that clears the issue.

I ran it and it said it found and fixed 1 issue (didn't indicate what the
issue was). Tried to create the macro and got the stack error message.
Deleted it, tried again and... it worked. I have no idea why, but I'm going
to use the heck out of while it lasts this time!!

Thanks for your input!

Does your F3 key work now? Good to hear that the stack error is
corrected though.

Try a macro with the code

Selection.InsertAutotext

If that code is run when an Autotext entry is selected, the autotext will be
inserted in place of the selected text.

No, it still has that other macro assigned to it. I just finally got the
macro I created to work (assigned to a different key).

On another note... Is there anywhere that Word users can go to suggest
changes in the next version? I'd really like to have the option back for
autocomplete for autotexts, and one thing I really miss from WordPerfect is
the option to insert multiple templates on the same document instead of
creating a new document each time. WordPerfect also had a nifty feature
called something like "temporary macros" that you could create but were only
saved until WordPerfect was closed. When WP was reopened they were gone, it
was great for projects that had repetitive stuff that you might not use again.

You can emulate the WordPerfect Temporary Macros by setting the Read Only
Attribute of the Normal.dot template so that it will not be saved when you
exit Word. Then any macros that you develop in that template during a
session of Word will be deleted when you shut down Word. That is the way
that I have my Normal.dot template setup so that the macros that I develop
for people in these newsgroups are deleted when I exit Word.

You can post suggestions for future versions of Microsoft Software to
(e-mail address removed) (You probably need to get all of your friends to do the
same thing and then some.)
