Macros OK in template but vanish from docs based on the template

I have created a template in Word 2003 that contains a set of macros and a
toolbar with buttons that users can click to run the macros.

If you open the template (.dot file), the macros & toolbars are there.
However, if you create a document (.doc file) based on the template, the
macros & toolbars are gone.

It used to work, i.e., the toolbar & macros were available in any documents
based on the template. What could have changed? The template is stored on a
network if that matters.

I know of no way to reproduce what you describe. If you look under Tools >
Templates and Add-Ins... is your template the attached template?

Are you sure your original template is a Word template? I'm not sure, but
suspect that if it is a Word document on which the extension has been
changed to .dot it will not act in all respects like a template created by
saving as a template from within Word.

What you describe has been observed in the resulting merge document from a
mailmerge.

Thank you for the prompt & helpful response!

I'm not able to check the document today, but it is entirely possible that
the extension was changed. As you say, if the file is really just a doc in
disguise, it wouldn't behave like a real template.

In theory, then, I should be able to fix it by re-saving the template under
a new name as file type "template".

I will also check the templates & add-ins dialog when I have access to the
file again. I appreciate your help.
