Mail doesn't receive or open *.doc properly

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Using my PC, I emailed a *.doc (as an attachment) to my Mac. The Mac receives it as a *.dat file (instead of the *.doc format), which Word on the Mac cannot open. Can someone tell me what's the problem? Thanks

To avoid the problem zip your document file before attaching & send the
zipped copy.
