Mail Duplication

Nick

We run an SMTP/POP3 server for roughly 39 clients
spanning over 70 domains. We realized a couple months ago
our clients that have configured Outlook to keep a copy
of the message on the server have run into a snag. Every
so often their machine will download all the content of
their mailbox from the server even though it had already
downloaded their email already.

I verified these are not new messages as the headers are
exactly the same. Right now this spans 3-4 users. The
only common connection between them is that they are all
running Outlook 2003. I have not been able to narrow this
down at all. I have purged entire hosting accounts and
recreated them because we cannot find a fix for this.

Any ideas why they would continue to have these issues
and how we can fix it? My first guess was this was
completely server side but I'm not so sure now. I
realized when checking emails, it appears Outlook is
creating a new file inside their mailbox that is
something like an inventory of their email.

One of the users also receives this email once in a
while ---> Task 'mail.domain.com - Receiving' reported
error (0x80042104) : 'Your e-mail server does not have
the features required to allow messages to be left on the
server.'

Please help!!!

Thanks

The user that periodically gets the 0x80042104 error should upgrade to SP-1
of Outlook 2003, which should fix that problem.

The other problem (occasionally downloading all mail again) is (I hope!)
fixed by a post-SP-1 hotfix. I don't know whether there's an article in the
Knowledge Base about this - you might try searching for one, or contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to see about availability.

I will double check but I believe the user (my wife) had
already been updated to SP1.

From your post, this appears to be a known issue with
Outlook 2003...... There should be a fix for this in a
post-SP-1 hotfix that should be available in the near
future if not available now?

I have searched everywhere I can think of and have yet to
find any decent information regarding this. I do
appreciate the post and will check back to confirm this
is a known issue.

Thanks

I just discovered that the fix I thought had been made available as a hotfix
is still being tested... I'm not sure when it will be released as a hotfix.
