Mail graphic opens without opening mail message.

I have a user who has a intermittant problem. Sometimes she just highlights
a message and the Envelope will show open yet the message doesn't open. This
causes her to think messages have been read, but have not. This has caused
some work problems. Does anyone have any experience with this type of issue?
I thought purhaps her mouse may have caused an error, but since the message
does not open I could not see a relationship.
