Mail hanging on Outlook 2003

Hey all, I am running Outlook 2003 on a WINXP Pro SP2. Our mail server is
Exchange 2000. When I go to download my mail via POP3 (dialup), the mail
starts to download and then hangs and restarts downloading the same messages.
We have several machines on our network and several remote users via dialup
but for some reason this machine just consistently has this problem. We
usually have our admin delete a bunch of mail from that acct in exchange and
then it works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions???

Do you have an AV scanning incoming/outgoing mail? Norton Internet
Security?

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head scratching, Abe asked:

Yes actually I do, Inet Security and Antivirus 2003.

Virus scanning of mail is a complete waste of time, provided you're running
the on-access scanner and it causes more problems with mail than it solves.
Disable it.

Is that because Antivirus is already running on AutoProtect, so it would
catch a virus before it ever arrived anyways?

Thanks for the help!

It won't catch it before it arrives, but it will prevent it from running on
your machine so you're protected without scanning incoming mail.

Well, if your server already scans for viruses before you even download the
message, then it's a double or triple waste of time. What I was referring
to is the on-access scanner (McAfee's VirusShield or Trend Micro's
OfficeScan Real-Time Monitor are two examples). Perhaps that's what
AutoProtect is. It should show in the System Tray. If that's running, then
as soon as you try to open an infected messages, the scanner would notice
the infection and either quarantine the temporary file you created by
opening the message or would repair the infection. Thus, to have scanned it
on the way in didn't add any significant protection. A scanner placing
itself between your mail client and the server also introduces
communications delays that can affect the mail transmission protocols in
adverse ways.

Scanning on the way out, in addition to introducing communications delays,
should never detect an infected message, since your on-access scanner should
have already detected any infection at the time it was introduced and
cleaned it up. So, the outgoing scanner will never have anything to do,
except interfere with your mail traffic.
