Mail Merge Access to Word XP

I have a problem in Word XP when I use mail merge from an Access DB table.

When I add in the field codes I loose the formatting from the Table this is
very annoying when my letters need the date and currency fields is there any
way with out manipulating the field codes that I can overcome the problem

I assume word is outputting the underlying stored data and not the visible
formated data that is seen in the db. If you dont wish, or cannot ammend
your db fields consider creating two extra fields in the db that are
formated in a way that is reproduced correctly eg text fields.
Perhaps pose the Q to an Access specific ng, on the msnews.microsoft.com
