Mail Merge print to file

I don't have a printer at home and I am trying to save my mail merge to file.
I do the save, then when I try to open the file, only the first letter is
visable and I get a message saying they can't open it because information is
missing. What am I doing wrong?

Mail merge, what program? Word? Pre 2007 versions, merge to new document.
Save the document and transfer the full document to the printer computer and
print.

Word 2007, Mailings, do merge and then Finish & Merge, select Edit
individual ... and then save the output of that merge to transport and
print.
