Mail Merge

I have tried most of the suggestions here but the problem continues.

I use publisher to mail merge on a monthly basis. The data file is in Excel.
Initially it would take records at a time before freezing without an error
message (had to restart the computer). Gradually the number of records
Publisher would process before crashing would get lower and lower (550, 375,
250, 129!) resulting in my having to create an Excel workbook with a number
of individual sheets to complete the merge.

Any suggestions?????? Please???
