Mail Server

I have a client who has six users in their office. They have Microsoft
Outlook and they are looking to be able to do internal email. Each of the
users have an external email account. They also want to be able to do task
schedule and use a central calendar for appointments and so forth.

Can they do this without having a mail server? If they can how do I set it
up for them? If not, then I expect that they will need to purchase a mail
server that will work with Outlook. Which mail servers can I look at to help
them with that. I know Exchange will do it, but I'm looking at other options
as well.
