Mailbox on exchange server is is full but outlook 2003 still sents

Mailbox on exchange server is is full but outlook 2003 still sents out mail ,
but comes back with a msg on the email that the user mailbox is full and mail
cant be sent. When compared to the older version of outlook it actually
prompts the user that the mailbox is full and ask if user wants to deleted
the recyled bin or do something abt the system. Pls advise whether why this
is so. And if there is a work around.
