Mails return to inbox after deletion or moving to subfolder

Using Outlook 2007 IMAP mail on a new installation after installing
Outlook and pointing it to the old PST file I have the following problem.
Emails which are deleted are returned to the inbox upon clicking send/
receive.
Also, if I move emails into subfolders they appear back in the inbox.
I notice the icon in the bottom right indicating that a data file is
being checked but this seems never to complete.
