Maintaining File Links: Moving from PC to Mac

B

Ben C.

Hello all,

This is my first post to this group. I did a search here and across
the web for an answer to this question but couldn't find one. I also
called Apple Care but the person I talked to didn't have an answer.

My issue involves moving from a PC to a Mac and wondering how I can
keep the links within my Excel files working when I move the files to
the Mac folder/directory structure.

I have an iMac running Leopard with a copy of MS Office running under
VMWare Fusion which is running Windows XP.

For example, on the PC I have a file linking to another file in a
completely different directory. Let's say the original file is at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\FOLDER1\

The file above is linked to the following file in a different
directory located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\FOLDER2\

What kind of folder structure would I create on the Mac to have the
link above continue to work?

Thanks in advance for any assistance or pointers on how to go about
resolving this issue!

I don't think you need to worry about it. Just move the files. When you open
them Excel might ask to update the links, just do so and point to the new
location.

Thanks but there are too many files to do this with. I'd be spending
too much time relinking my files.

Is there a way to create a file structure on the Mac that will
preserve the links?

Thanks again for your help.

Have you tried it? Name the folder and files the same on the mac as on the
PC.

Thanks for the suggestion but what would the same folder name look
like?

\Documents and Settings\UserID\My Documents\ etc. etc.

I was hoping someone out there actually moved files from the PC to the
Mac with links in them and knew what the process would be.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Just put the files in the same named folders with the same names. The full
path is not necessary to duplicate.

Bob,

Thanks for the tips. Copying the files to same folders as before
worked well. I didn't realize that Windows XP under the virtual
machine is where the files get copied. I thought the files got copied
to the Mac side and somehow I pointed to these files from Windows XP.
Now I know a bit more than I did a week ago.

Thanks again.
