Make a change to large list of contacts

I'd like to make a change to a large list of contacts automatically so I
don't have to make each change individually. Can that be done?

Some users have made changes like those directly in the database using
Sql. But you have to know Sql and beware of changing critical pieces
of information that may corrupt the database.
