Make Office 2003 Default Programs

N

Neil

I have installed the 2007 Beta, but I want to keep the Excel, Word ... etc.
programs as the default programs for their file types (.xls, .doc, etc). I
tried changing this in Windows Folder Options, but when I double click on a
file from My Computer, it lauches the Beta version of the program. Since some
of the users of the program are not "techies", I want them to be able to use
the program that they are familiar with, by defult.

How can I manage this?

As it has been in previous versions, the last version you start
becomes the default application which I believe is eventually how it
will work when using Office 2007 and previous versions.

I started Excel 2003 and opened a file, saved it and closed it.

When I double clicked on the file, Excel 2007 opened again.

Maybe you can try it and let me know what yousee.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I think you missed the part about " I believe is eventually how it
will work when using Office 2007 and previous versions" in my previous
reply. :)

IOW, yes, I see the same behavior but I suspect it will change based
on past Office versions. Keep in mind, this is a beta and everything
has not been finalized.

Also note Microsoft doesn't recommend side-by-side installations so
I'm not sure how much support will be given for these types of issues
in the event this doesn't occur. :-(

Thanks - hopefully you're right.

I agree about the Beta part, but even Microsoft stresses that this should
not be used for business critical applicatons. Having said this, they should
make sure that the Beta versions can exist side by side with the previous
ones, even if this is not their policy for a normal release.

Hi Neil,

Office 2003 and 2007 are able to 'exist' side by side, but as in previous versions Microsoft's position is that they do not
recommend installing multiple versions together.

MS does offer for users of Office 2000 through 2003 a two download set of converters (File Format Awareness Update and Compatability
Pack) to allow those versions to read and write the new, 2007 file formats, although they don't give the older versions any of the
new versions features.
