making the message received pane shorter

Having trouble with the dates mail was received (last to first), somehow I changed the entire message pane. Now all the messages show up and take up all the pane. Is there any way to make this pane shorter?

I can't quite follow what you're trying to fix. Can you give us more
details, including youir Outlook version?
