Manual line break spaces on TOC or Table of tables

Hi,

Is it possible to remove the spaces created by a manual
line break (SHIFT-ENTER) in the TOC or Table of tables?
The problem that I have is when the titles of my tables
are long the first line is not aligned with the second
line in the Table of tables because the two (SHIFT-ENTER)
created in the text. Anyhelp idea is welcome, thanks.

Hi Eric,

Which version of Word are we dealing with, here? I'm not
able to reproduce, in a quick test, what you describe and
show. I suspect it has something to do with how you've
formatted either the caption (is that what you mean by table
title?) or the TOC style (as bullets and numbering?). My
first thought is that you have to make sure the tab and
indent settings for that style align.

Hi,

I'm using Word2003. What I have done is that after the
caption, I have created 2 manual line break so that the
description of the table appears beside the caption in
the TOC. In doing so the two Manual Line Break appear as
two spaces in the TOC.

In my document
-------------------------
Table I(Manual Line Break)
(Manual Line Break)
Description of Table I

In the TOC
------------------------

Table I ..Long description of Table I
which takes two lines instead of one

Another approach is to use two separate styles for the table number and
table title. Add the needed amount of Space After to the Table Number style
so that you don't have to insert extra lines or empty paragraphs. Include
only the Table Title style in your list of tables and format the
corresponding TOC style to have Table X. numbering.

Hi,

By default when I insert a caption (Table, Figure, etc..)
it is assigned the "caption" style. Is there a way to
assign a different style to a caption (Table, Figure,
etc..) when it is created or do I have to modify
the "caption" style of the caption (Table, Figure,
etc...) after it has been created?

Hi,

If I create two separate styles for the table number and
table title, I will have to create two table of content
(TOC, one for the Headings and one for the Tables. Is
there something that I should be aware if I create two
TOC in the same document? Thanks,

If you want to include the tables in the main table of contents, include the
Table Title style at a level one below the lowest level of heading included
(for example, if you're including Headings 1-3, give Table Title an outline
level of 4) and format that TOC style (TOC 4 in this example) to match
whatever heading level you like, or format it differently.

You can use the Caption style for the figure number if desired. It can be
modified to look any way you want it.

Hi,

From what I understand, if I use two style to create the
table number and table title I can't use the caption
label "table" because only the table number will appear
in the TOC of tables. So that's why I will use two styles
as you recommended. The only way that I see to create a
TOC from two styles (table number and table title) is to
create the TOC using styles as the normal TOC for heading
is created. I do not want to include de table number and
titles in the main TOC for headings, instead I will
create a second TOC in a following section of my
document. So I was wondering if the method that I was
correct or I'm doing it the wrong way...Thanks for your
advice.

The initial problem that I have is that I created the
table number and the table title in the same paragraph by
using (SHIFT-ENTER) twice. These 2 SHIFT-ENTER created a
double spaces between in the TOC. When the title of my
table is long these two spaces create a misalignement
between the first line and the second line of the table
title in the TOC.

Let's back up here. You can still do what you want and either list the
tables in the overall TOC or create a separate one (the latter is more
common). Here's how:

1. Use Insert | Caption to insert the Table 1, Table 2, etc., numbers. These
will be in Caption style. If you don't like the appearance of the style, you
can modify it. Or you can apply a different style to the captions after they
have been inserted.

2. Use a separate style for the table title. Give this style an outline
level higher than any heading style that will be included in your TOC.

3. When you construct your TOC, include the levels for your headings and the
table titles. Let's say you're including Headings 1-3 and your table title
is Level 4; so include four levels. If you have any Heading 4s in the
document, be sure to remove the 4 from beside Heading 4 in the TOC Options.

4. Format the TOC 4 style to be autonumbered with the label "Table
[number]."

The results will be as follows:

In the document:

Table 1 [Caption style]

Title of Table 1 [Table Title style]

In the TOC:

Table 1. Title of Table 1 [TOC 4 style]

If you want to create a separate list of tables, you can do this by creating
a TOC that includes only Level 4. This can be done through the Table of
Contents dialog, but you can also hand-edit the TOC field if necessary to
