mapi could not be opened

I tried to export data from windows live mail to outlook xp,
but get this error - mapi could not be opened.

Outlook just opens my hard drives c: d: etc, not the outlook as such. How

Sorry, but I have no idea what you mean by this. Do you mean that clicking
the Outlook icon opens WIndows Explorer?

All mail related options are no longer there. Not even import, else I would
have imported from .pst file

What do you think a new mail profile is? You create one under Control Panel->Mail Icon->Profiles. it has nothing to do with your .pst file.

That’s exactly what I was refering to, that option is usually visible in
outlook , but in this case it was not active. However thro Control
Panel->Mail Icon->Profiles , did manage to create a profile, then went to
outlook express > exported to the new profile, the export process said it
finished successfully, but on opening outlook, it is empty.

wat does the title bar of the window say when it opens?

Try connecting your old .PST file to the new profile you created:
