MAPI error 0X80070057

I was attempting to import an Excel file of name, address etc into Outlook.
I cross matched the Excel named ranges with that of Outlook and clicked
finish. After a few seconds the above message came up and although some
information was imported it was only the first line of the address. Any
clues as to how I screwed up?

Not sure what you mean by "some info was imported". Some info on the very
first record (row)?

Anyhow without knowing specifics of the data file itself other then it's
Excel - suggestion would be to isolate the record that incurred the issue
(if it's the first - it makes it much easier). This could very likely be a
data related issue with one of the columns being "extremely long" for the
target field it's being imported into (in this case - I'd look at a text
field that is longer then 255 characters as a starting point).

Thanks for trying to help - even though the info I gave was inadequate. The
Excel spreadsheet I am attempting to import from has data in columns and
rows. The first row contains the headers of 'First name', 'Second name',
'Title' etc and the columns fill in the detail for each contact so that each
row beneath the title contains the full contact details seperated according
to the headers. There are 30 contacts. Each column has been highlighted and
given a name.
In Outlook I click 'file' 'import' and point to the spreadsheet. I get the
list of fields on the spreadsheet with a blank tick box to the left of each
field. I check the first and if it is not recognised by the program I am
prompted to identify which of the fields in Outlook it relates to. I then
drag from the left and connect to the field on the right then click 'OK'.
This procedure is repeated for all Excel source fields.
I click 'Finish' and the import. The process starts and then I get the
error message shown in the subject. It is headed 'Translation error'. I
selected to carry on with other steps and then look at the resulting contacts
list. The 'title', 'first name' and 'last name' were not imported at all.
The were some 200 'contacts' set up. All had only one field filled in and
none linked the full contact details in one 'contact' card.
Any assistance greatfully received.

To keep this as simple as possible - suggest repeating these steps as you
outlined into a new folder. When you encounter the error (sounds like some
contacts were imported) - find the last contact in your input data source
that succeeded.

One of the causes of the error you have received is that the length of a
field (the contents of the field - not the field name) exceeds 255
characters) which is what I suggested that you look for. To ensure that this
has absolutely nothing to do with the worksheet itself, save your data as a
CSV file and import that. If the problem repeats itself - you definitely
have an issue with your data that you need to locate and remove.
