Margins change in Word documents when saving to CD-ROM only

P

pvanwell

Whenever I save my files directly onto a CD-ROM (CD-RW) my document margins
change back to 1.25, though set per the normal.dot template at 1.0. This
only happens when I save the file to my CD-ROM and not when I save it to my
hard drive. This happens both in Word 2002 and 2003 and is a recent change
as it did not used to happen.

T

TF

Completely impossible for saving to CD-R to do this.

What is more likely is that you are opening the document on a different
computer? See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TextReflow.htm

Completely impossible or not, it is happening! Whenever I save a document on
my computer at work or at home, it doesn't matter, in front of my eyes the
margins are adjusted to 1.25 eventhough my normal.dot template settings are
at 1.0 The article you referred me to deals with another issue that I am
quite aware of, but that is not my problem.

Impossible or not it is happening on my computer at home and at work. In
either case right in front of me when I save the document to my CD-RW the
margins change from 1.0 to 1.25 and are saved as such. This did not use to
happen. It is something of the past few months, I noticed elsewhere on this
forum that it happened to another person as well. Saving and re-saving the
normal template does not work. When I save that same file to the hard drive
that change does not occur.

T

TF

Has the document been saved to the local HDD first or are you saving
directly to the CD-R?

Word will not automatically modify your page margins. What I suspect
is happening is you are opening the documents using the "Recover text
from any file format".

Check the Files of Type drop down in the Open dialog box and make sure
it is set to Word documents.

This was my first reaction as well, but I think it is unlikely because that
setting is not "sticky" in Word 2002 or 2003.

Beth and Suzanne,

Thanks for your help. I looked at what Beth suggested and played around
with it. Regardless of how I open my files, when I save them (to CD-ROM) the
margins change.

I started another post later this afternoon, in which I added another odd
thing I noticed happening. When using page numbers, such that the first page
number doesn't show, upon saving (to CD-ROM) the first page number re-appears
on the first page.

Peter.

Terry,

I am saving directly to CD-RW or CD-R (doesn't matter). As I indicated, I
never used to have this problem until now. And as I responded in another
post it doesn't occur with 100% consistency, certain files (old or new) will
save just fine, regardless of size and/or complexity.

Peter.

Hi Peter,

It could be Word is not recognizing the file format correctly and it
is utilizing the recover text format to open the file.

In past versions of Word when the recover text format was used, as
Suzanne noted, the Files of Type in the Open dialog box would default
to "Recover text from any file". Now if it is used the Files of Type
will default to "All Files". However Word could still be using the
recover text format to open the document.

In order to determine if this is the case:

- Go to Tools/Options/General
- Turn on "Confirm conversion at Open"
- Open a document that exhibits the behavior

You may encounter a "Confirm Conversion" dialog box. If so, what is
selected in the Convert File dialog?

It seems that the margins change to Microsoft's default 1.25" when Peter
saves the document. If I understand correctly, the margins change in the
currently open document the moment that it is saved to the CD. Not when he
opens it after saving to his CD-R or CD-RW. This seems highly unusual,
almost impossible as some posters have mentioned. I have not been able to
recreate the problem with Word 2000. Is this an anomoly with Word 2002-2003?

Hello Beth,

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately the dialog box did not open. I
did exactly what you suggested. My problem does not when I open my files,
although they are saved with the adjusted (1.25 margins). Instead my problem
occurs when I save a document that is still open to CD-ROM. Once I click the
"Save" icon, my page settings change from 1.0 margins to 1.25 and just in the
past few days I noticed that my first page number keeps re-appearing in spite
of "turning it off".

Nope. Never heard of it in any version of Word. I don't think the fact that
it is W2003 has any significance.

Now I am confused. What do you mean by sentence, "My problem does not when I
open my files, although they are saved with the adjusted (1.25 margins)"?

Do you save your files to the local HDD and with what margins? If you open
the saved document directly from the HDD, what margins do they have? What
margins are set in the template (presumably Normal.dot)?

I am beginning to think that you have set your Template to Automatically
update and are trying to save the same document with two different margin
sizes and getting a confliction of settings?

Terry,

My main storage medium is the CD-RW, due to my work I can most easily take a
CD-RW from one place to the next. While I am working on a document in Word
using the normal.dot template as it's foundation and save that file to my
CD-RW, my page settings change, I can see the margins shift as it happens.
My normal.dot margin settings are 1.0 for the left and right margin, once I
save my document to the CD-RW the margins change to 1.25 (left and right).
If I close the file/document at that time and re-open it, it opens with the
1.25 margin setting regardless on which computer I open it. Yet any new
document I start opens with the 1.0 margins per the normal.dot template.

As I'm sure you've realized, none of us have ever heard of such a
phenomena before so please bear with us and we should be able to get
to the bottom of it. :)

I'm not sure what you've tried already, since this topic has been
split in several threads, but did you see if this occurs when you
start Word using the /a switch? Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

And, just to verify, this does not occur if you save the document to
your HD?

Also, if you could stick with this thread and abandon the others in
this group we'd appreciate it. It helps to have the full conversation
for review if needed. :)

Beth,

I will stick to this thread. I have tried the /a option, it was suggested
by Terry Farrell. It made no difference.

And yes this problem does not occur when I save to HD.

At the moment I have run out of ideas. This is the first incidence ever of
margins resizing spontaneously when saving the a CD-R. My only thought at
the moment is that it has something to do with the temp files that Word has
to create in the target folder when it saves. Word needs to build and delete
temp files in the target folder, so you really should use a CD-RW - but I
know that many users trying to save direct to a CD-RW using packet writing
have problems with corruptions, but not exactly as you describe.

Terry,

I appreciate all of your help, even if in the end it din't have a positive
outcome. By the way I do write to a CD-RW, not a CD-R.

Peter.

B

Beth Melton

I'm with Terry. Not only have I run out of ideas too but I've also
considered temp files too since it only occurs when you save to a
CD-RW.

The only thing is I can't quite decide how it would happen. Do you
happen to have Fast Saves enabled? Take a look under
Tools/Options/Save and make sure Fast Saves is turned off. You
mentioned a previously deleted page number reappearing at some point
so using Fast Saves could be complicating matters. A Fast Save will
only write new edits to the document - it doesn't re-write the
document so previously deleted data may remain in the binary.

Also, while you are there, does turning on "Make local copy of files
stored on network or removable drives" make a difference?

This option will save the document to your HD first and then copy it
to your CD-RW after it has been saved.
