Margins, indents, tabs

K

Karen

I have a document with photos inserted. Under each photo, my user wants it
to have a caption like:

Photo 1 Description:

If there is a long description then I need the next line to indent like so:

Photo 1 Description: This is a long line. This is a long line.
This is a long line.

I have a tab between the '1' of Photo and 'Description' and I've set the
hanging indent to a point just past the word 'Description'. As I understand
it, as the description gets long enough to wrap to the next line, it should
indent. What actually happens is:

Photo 1
Description: This is a long line. This is a long
line.
This is a long line.

The 'Description' indents and the next word-wrapped line of text moves left
to the page margin.

I admit that I clearly don't understand hanging indent.

Any suggestions as to how to make this work would be appreciated. BTW, I
did try a table but, for some reason, it won't word-wrap in the cell,
besides I'd really like to avoid tables if possible on this document.

Hi Karen,

From the Format menu, select Paragraph and set the Left Indent to 0 and from
the Special pulldown, select Hanging and enter the value there that you
require. Then from the Format menu, select Tabs and place a tab stop and
the same position that you set for the hanging indent.

To save having to do this each time, it would be best to create a Style for
it.

Alternatively, you could use a two column table without any borders.
