In 2004 in preference > Save click on Prompt to save in normal.

In 2008 this is a waste of effort it does nothing. click to turn it off save changes lets it automatically change without your consent.

To do the same thing you have to make changes to fonts and items such as margins (in Format > Document) click on button for default and choose to save changes . Then when you quit document it will ask if you wish to save changes normal. click yes.

Once set, it will always start out with setting saved in default.

While your at it to be on safe side I would open this before anything
gets changed. and type something then remove it so it blank. Then save
as a template. When you need this particular format just open from the
*My templates* under the name you saved. 1/2 margins (for example). Do
your document and this time save as a docx or doc file with a different
name.

The system actually works better in 2004 because if you tick the item
for the reminder it actually will ask if you want to change to normal
after the document is saved and you attempt to quit Word. 2008 simply
doesn't honor this even though the setting is in there as well
