Mark-as-read problem

In Outlook 2019, when I hover/scroll mouse over unread emails, they aren't marked as read, as in early version. How do I mark as read?
I tried... File/Options/Mail/ReadingPane, I have "Mark item" ticked, as well as "Single key" and "Turn on", and I have rebooted, and run ScanPst.
