Mark email as read?

Outlook 2003

If my unread mail folder has one message in it when I highlight it it is no
longer bold and no longer shows as unread. Is there a setting where I can
stop Outlook from doing this and only mark it as read if I manually click
"mark as read"?

Tools | Options | Other | Reading Pane > clear the box for "Mark items as
read when viewed in the Reading Pane."
