Marking an index entry turns on "Reveal all formatting"

Steve Adams

Marking an index entry with Alt-Shift-X in Word 2002 always turns on
"Reveal all formatting" which makes it difficult to read through the
rest of the document to look for more entries to mark. Is there a way
to mark an index entry without turning on Reval all formatting?

Thanks,
Steve

No. Word does this because XE fields are formatted as Hidden text, which are
not displayed when nonprinting characters are not displayed. What you can do
is check the box for "Hidden text" on the View tab of Tools | Options. This
will cause the Show/Hide ¶ button to toggle between display of all
nonprinting characters and just Hidden text. This won't, unfortunately, stop
Word from toggling on the display <sigh>, but at least you can switch it
back off and still be able to see your index entry fields.
