Master Documents & Page Numbering

I am creating a use manual for a new product my company is bringing to market. I have created a master document to manage 7 or 8 subdocuments that comprise the manual. I am having HUGE trouble with page numbering. I'd like for the "front pages" (i.e. TOC, Record of Revisions, Table of Active Pages, etc.) to have roman numerals, and the actual "meat" of the manual to be numbered 1-1, 1-2, 1-3....2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and so on.

I don't know if this makes any sense, but the problem is that the pages that I want to show as 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 are coming up as 2-1, 2-3, and so on. I suppose there is an error with my sectioning, but so far I have had no luck with anything I try (And I even have a Word reference book on hand!!). Can anyone recommend and quick fix or give any suggestions at all? I have been in front of the computer for hours!

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:
http://www.addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm> for information on the
Master Document feature and workarounds. (This page also has a link to Steve
Hudson's chapter on how he gets Master Documents to work.) See <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm> for more
information on what goes wrong, and <URL:

how to salvage what you can.
