Master Project with 140 subprojects

I am using Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003 and currently have 140
seperate projects. All projects are using the same available resources. In
an attempt to link the tasks across the projects, I was thinking of making a
master project. I did a trial run with 5 projects and inserted them into a
master project that is saved on my hard-drive. The problem that I am running
into is the time it takes to open the master project. Each of the 5 projects
takes 15-20 seconds to open so with 140 projects, we are talking 35-45
minutes. Any suggestions?

Hi CQ,

Maybe I can return the favor you did me by your reply on the Project
newsgroup. I think PS2003 has a hard limit of 10 projects open in a R/W
master project. But whether it does or not, you could leave all 140 up on
the server and open temporary master projects as needed. PS03 will create a
master project whenever you select more than one file from a view in project
center and hit the "open" button on the project center toolbar. You could
also create a master through the thick client, Project 2003 Pro. If you
wanted, you could have convenience master projects consisting of a few files
saved on your computer and open them as needed. From where I sit, I doubt
that all 140 projects will be linked to every other project, but where I sit
could be far removed from your problem.

We (my dept) has 65 projects in one program. We have a couple of master
projects with read-only links to subsets of the whole program for managerial
reporting convenience, but we use temp masters to create external links.

Hope this helps,
Crook

Which ever way you do it, you'll still have the perf hit of opening all the
projects from the server. There isn't really anything you can do about this,
except perhaps by having several master projects each with a subset of the
140 projects

Wait - let's back up here. Why do you want a master project with the
140 subprojects? Or even 10 master projects with 14 each? What are you
trying to accomplish? I'm thinking your goal may be able to be
accomplished through a different means. If it's reporting, I may have
some other ideas. What kind of reporting? How many lines in the
average project, by the way? 200? 2000? Master projects containing
subprojects in Project Server 2003 are a major pain. Very very slow to
open, save, etc.
