Master Project with only 'read' access

I have MSP2002 Pro.
All sub-projects are inserted in Master project which is residing on
server.

Is it possible to have this 'master project' file not editable. It will
be only viewed for customised reports. Alternatively editing to be done
only by giving password.

All editing/ updating should be done in individual sub-project files
only.

Can this be done?
Help / hints will be appreciated.

3326ubb,
You don't mention whether you are using the Server version of Project or
simply that the master file resides on a server. However, either way,
you should be able to save the master with a password (File/Save
As/Tools/General Options). I've never done it though so it might be that
each of the subprojects will also need a password. Try it, see what
works.

Another option you might consider is to create a static master instead
of the default dynamic master. A static master is created by unchecking
the "link to project" option at the bottom right of the Insert Project
window. A static master is a completely independent file that is a
snapshot of the subproject at a point in time. If someone edits the
static master it will have no impact on the subprojects. Of course, a
static master can also be password protected and in that case you
definitely do NOT need to also password protect the individual
subprojects.

Hope this helps.

Thank u very much John,
I was very happy to try the suggested solutions. Your help came in
time. Both the options are fantastic & working. Help in need ...

We can save the file as read only with write protection password, still
you can open sub-projects w/o password.

Thanks once again.
