Master Project

I have read a few placed that if you want to have multiple .mpp files
linked together you create a Master Project and copy and paste each
project into this main file...is this the way to do it? Are there any
posts or links on the net that anyone can suggest that goes into this a
little more in depth?

Thanks!

Hi,

No, this is definitely NOT the way to do it.
If you only want to show the tasks of several projects in one Gantt Chart
the way to do it is to "Insert the Project" : Insert menu, Project. Look for
Help on that subject.
Unfortunately, by doing so you do not consolidate the resources.
To achieve that, look up the help for Resource Sharing to build a resource
pool.
Once the pool is built, save it, close and then re-open uing the third of
the options presented: that will create a master file (thus with the files
inserted) for you.
Hope this helps,

You can do this. You don't have to. What do you actually want to do?
If your current arrangement gives you everything you need, then why
change it?

Making a master project is normally/often done to give programme level
view or departmental level view of a collection of projects. It does
make things like high-level or milestone reporting easier.

Maybe this will help if I explain a bit more.

What I am trying to do is link up multiple projects to look fo
overallocation etc. without changing anything within each individua
project. Does that help? I am fairly new to MS Project (although
have read an entire book on how to use it) and I am finally starting t
put projects relevant to our company into MS Project. I had playe
around with a disc full of examples that came with the "how to" book
purchased but it is MUCH different when you actually apply it to you
business.

Thanks

Resource pool is the way to go to see overallocations. Not sure what
etc is, but getting a good understanding of resource requirements across
a number of projects is certainly a significant step forward.

I learnt from Step by Step Microsoft Project 20003 from Microsoft Press,
but I was already familiar with other scheduling applications at that point.
