Master Projects in Project Server

Currently my Project server environment does not allow for master projects,
and I am not sure why it was set up that way (before my time). Is there a
recommendation as to why the server should not allow master projects?

Please advise. Thanks,

Hey Dots,

In the server documentation (particularly the Microsoft Office Project
Server 2003 Administrators Guide) it talks about all of the duplicate
information that gets stored if you do a master project. It skews your
resource assignments and if you're doing portfolio analysis, pretty much
everything is doubled.

If you're using server, what you can do is go to your projects screen on the
project website, highlight all of your projects, and click open.
It will create a local "Master Project" looking project on your desktop
instance of MS Project.

The default permissions in Project Server 2003 do not allow a PM to either
save or publish a master project. However, your Project Server can safely
allow PM's to SAVE a master project, but he/she should never allow anyone to
PUBLISH a master project. Publishing a master project is what causes the
duplication of task assignments on each team member's timesheet in PWA, as
referenced in Buddy Robbins previous answer to your questions.

Therefore, you can handle this issue in one of a couple ways:

1. Ask your Project Server to go to Admin - Server Configuration and allow
master projects to be saved (but not published) in Project Server

or

2. You can create temporary master project using the technique to which
Buddy Robbins referred in his previous post

Hope this helps.

I have e new question.
We have a situation where we work with non detailed projects where
resoucer are allocated (Generic resources). They are saved and
published.
Later in the proces (years later) detailed projeces are worked out and
published and the inserted into the non detailed projects. So we have a
non detailed project with x numbers of detailed projects.

When the detailed projects are inserted into the nondetailed project -
we still publish the lot.
Is that a mistake?
Are the resourcer from the detailed projecets published twice? I have
checked the Analyzer and it doesnt seem to be a problem.....

Thanks all for the response! I had a feeling the Master would cause
duplication, but didn't know how to work around it aside from saving locally.
THis helps. Thanks!

Are you using Generic resources in both the detailed and non-detailed
projects? If so, publishing your master project will not present any
problems because the assignments for Generic resources do not get published
to PWA. If you are using human resources in the detailed projects, then
publishing the assignments in the master project can lead to duplication of
task assignments on each resource's timesheet page in PWA. Hope this helps.
